EARTH HOUR 2010

We at KH did our bit! so for ease I replicate the thank-you in full.

"I wish to thank you and your entire congregation at Kelvinside and Hillhead Parish Church for your fantastic support for WWF’s Earth Hour 2010 – helping to increase awareness about people and wildlife threatened by climate change.

Sign-ups are still being calculated but early indications suggest that a staggering one billion people took part in WWF’s Earth Hour around the world. Over 4,000 cities and towns in a record-breaking 126 countries signed up. Global landmarks which switched off included Edinburgh Castle and the Big Ben; the Eiffel Tower; the Great Pyramids; Sydney Opera House; and the Forbidden City in China.

Here in Scotland, this year’s Earth Hour really captured the imagination of the public leading to record numbers pledging to switch off - including 29 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities, over 300 schools and nearly two hundred businesses, public bodies and other organisations.

Many of the nation’s most iconic structures and buildings were plunged into darkness, including: Edinburgh Castle, Inverness Castle, Holyrood House, RRS Discovery, Wallace Monument in Stirling, George Square Monuments in Glasgow, the Scottish Parliament and the Falkirk Wheel. The Scottish Government, CoSLA, STUC, CBI Scotland, SCVO and each one of Scotland’s political parties also gave their support.
Former weather presenter Heather Reid joined WWF for an amazing light-show and countdown event at the Falkirk Wheel. Other events that took place in Scotland included a night golf charity event at Fairmont St Andrews, candle-lit meals, topical film screenings and torch-lit walks.

Once again, thank you to all at Kelvinside and Hillhead Parish Church for taking part, spreading the word and helping us to make WWF’s Earth Hour 2010 the best yet.

We are delighted by your support and hope that we may continue to count on it in the future as we work together to achieve WWF’s vision of a future where people and nature can thrive.
Yours sincerely

The snow held off this morning and the Contractors were hopeful of taking down 4 'flights' of scaffold before Christmas. however it was deemed too dangerous for that this morning. 'What about the weather vane?' I asked. 'Well we;ll see how it is the afternoon and we've got a back-up with the Steeplejacks if necessary' said Hunter & Clark. Off I went on errands and on my return driving along Queen Margaret Drive I noticed that the scaffold around Oran Mor had been taken down and then I noticed a 'High -vis' figure on top of our Fleche which clothed in its scaffold looks a bit like a pineapple over the roof tops of Grosvenor Terrace. Once it was safe to do so, I of course took photos of Archie and Craig tackling the re-installation of our very own 'Chanticleer' All this was of course whilst the snow was coming down again. Hard! However the Task was successfully accomplished. Thank You both, very much. It is much appreciated by all of us at ...

Re-Dedication Service

The clean-up team have been in this week! Many thanks to them---they know who they are! The Sanctuary is looking much cleaner and shinier now. Final clean-up on Friday! We are all looking forward to the Service on Saturday which Alastair Cherry will conduct, lots of people have said they are able to come and the weather forecast is favourable. One little word, the Church is still technically a Building Site, So please pay heed to the advice of the Stewards and remain on the permitted side of any roped-off areas. Hard Hats will not be neccessary.

Return from the brink?!

Don't do it! It does seem a little strange, but I think this is the second photo of this very hardworking person "up close and personal" with a window. Although the last time we managed to have the window brought down from on high for her close inspection. Whatever, the gist of all this is; that this particular property owned by the Congregation is now ready for a new tenant. As explained during the 'At-Home Sessions' this will be an extra source of income for the Congregation. A lot of work by a lot of people has gone into achieving this, and cleaning the windows on a glorious Autumn afternoon has been just part of it.
