The Glass is back!

The Teacher Memorial Window is back in place.
The lads are are working on the fittings for the secondary protection and once all of that is in place then the Scaffold can come down. Probably next week for that to happen.

Then I need to turn my attention to the Re-Dedication Service.

Following a request from our retiring Interim Moderator, I decided to show, yet again a detail from the Teacher Window. This 'little Red Monk' sits to the right of TRUTH and it was only when the high resolution photos were being developed prior to the downtaking, that we noticed the Salamander at his feet. The Salamander was commonly used to depict the triumph of good over evil, due in part to the once held perception that the salamander could survive fire. This picture was taken before the window was cleaned; now, having seen it this week, the detail is so much clearer. This particular part of the detail is not described in the recently discovered "Order of Service and Address" and I like to imagine that this figure is of St. Augustine the great man of Integrity and Wisdom and the Salamander helps to affirm this for me. Of course I may be completely wrong in this assumption, but this particular window is full of such intricate imagery, that it is easy to lose yourself in its myriad message. I'd like to think that others may also have their own thoughts.

    This is great news, Fiona! I need stained glass for inspiration, and wouldn't join any church that had none! Let's hope we can enjoy it and be inspired by it in our building for many decades to come. Your theory on the red monk is also interesting, and may. It's a pity such details were not commented on at the time the window was first created.

A Tidy Mind!

So we hit the deck running this week, First task on Monday Morning was a meeting with the Lead Architect and the Contractors to re-cap where we were when all work was put on hold and also to sort out the tidying up "Our Building Site" The Repair work at KH was originally organised around Church Life, and that will continue, the Congregation and all of the Hall Users will continue to meet in the Hall while the Contractors will carry on working upstairs in the Sanctuary. This is not the normal way of carrying out one of these major projects, I do like to think that perhaps we at KH blazed a trail. I think there is nothing worse than a Community building all wrapped up in scaffold and portacabins while the the Community who use it get lost in the busy-ness of the work. We are all in this together and hopefully we can all compromise as and when neccesary.

Catch-Up!

Abject apologies! Things have been very busy, with all Church Properties-----and the proper job! However, here is the stuff which has been sitting as a draft---- might as well have it---better late than never. 21:49 on 19 September 2009 Well the sun shone (most of the day)- The organ worked! (thank you Iain) and the Violin duets (Wilson & Jane xx) were a joy as well. 207 people came through the doors and all (bar one) were pleased with what they found. A lovely and characterful building with people inside who work very hard to keep it open for all the rest. I do hope our friends in Bellshill tonight have a good music event as well. Malcolm, our architect spoke informatively about the repair work and I know that people will assume that I'll do as well tomorrow. But for tonight--I'm off to bed. Sunday 20th.September ---- Very early before opening, I hoovered up all the leaves; this morning the Church Service was piped through the speaker system and the sun blazed through the ...

August Garden Parties

At KH there has been a tradition of having a Garden Party (or parties!) to allow members and friends to come together at the appropriate time to carry out essential works in the garden grounds. Yesterday was one of those days, and the rain did stop and the sun did come out! Firstly, many thanks to those who turned out and contributed their time and energy, and special thanks to Ann Shill for the yummy sandwiches. Our youngest labourer took great delight in sowing the seeds of the Wildflower Meadow, showing great interest in the different sizes and colours of seed, while Mum raked and prepared the ground! Office-bound workers enjoyed their blisters (I hope) proof of their hard work - and a chance for my new First Aid Kit to be used. And what was very pleasant was being able to actually do a little proper gardening apart from just the hard work of cutting grass and hedges!
